Salaries in Japan for top IT and executive roles are half of their counterparts in China, Hong Kong SAR, and Singapore

Hays Specialist Recruitment Japan KK released the “Hays Asia Salary Guide 2022” today. The guide provides salary overviews of 1148 roles in five Asian markets (China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore).  It also reveals trends and insights on recruitment, business outlook, and jobseeker and employer sentiments, based on findings from a survey of 9598 professionals.

  • Salary levels of highly skilled professionals in China, Hong Kong SAR, and Singapore exceed those in Japan (based on our actual data)
  • Salary increase rate for Japan is lower than the other Asian markets.

The survey of 9,598 professionals also found that Japan has the lowest salary increase rate.  
Salary increase rate below 3% is 70% in Japan, compared to34% in China, 64% in Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia 62% and 64% in Singapore.

Due to accelerating digitalisation after pandemic, demand for top talent is increasing.  To win fierce global competition, companies in other regions are willing to pay exceptional compensation for the best talent. 

Hays recommends Japanese employers accelerate their employment system reform, including equal pay for equal jobs, and promptly raise their wage levels to global standards to maintain Japan’s competitiveness.
